Telangana Makes Telugu a Compulsory Subject Across All School Boards
Telangana makes Telugu mandatory in all schools |
The Telangana government has announced the mandatory implementation of the Telugu language curriculum in all schools affiliated with CBSE, ICSE, IB, and other boards across the state. The decision, approved on February 25, 2025, follows a proposal from the Director of School Education, Telangana, Hyderabad.
Changes in Curriculum
- From the 2025-26 academic year, Class 9 students will study ‘Vennela’ (Simple Telugu) instead of ‘Singidi’ (Standard Telugu).
- The change will extend to Class 10 from the 2026-27 academic year.
- The Director of School Education has been instructed to oversee a smooth transition in all schools.
Background and Implementation Challenges
Telangana had earlier made Telugu compulsory for all schools (CBSE, ICSE, IB, and other boards) from Class 1 to 10 under the Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act, 2018. The initiative aimed to promote the Telugu language statewide and was officially enforced from the 2022-23 academic year.
However, implementation challenges, particularly in higher classes, led to an extension of the timeline for Classes 9 and 10, delaying full execution until 2025-26.
This policy ensures that students across all boards in Telangana gain proficiency in Telugu, reinforcing its cultural and linguistic significance in the state.
